Why Brands Use Contractors for Software Deployment Operations

The journey to offering new software services and products can be a challenging one for businesses. Without careful planning and attention, deploying new technology can become an expensive and risky proposition.

In Security Magazine, Bill Wosilius writes that in the name of economizing, business leaders often end up overestimating the capacity of their internal teams to securely deploy new services:

…It is easy to fall into the trap of trying to save money by using internal staff to deploy new technologies. Not surprisingly, this can lead to problems ranging from configuration issues, to suboptimal use of product features. In fact, DIY deployments are one of the most common sources of vulnerability causing data breaches. One of our OEM partners recently shared a statistic with me that they derived from in-house data – 95 percent of clients that had a breach were “do-it-yourselfers.”

Advantages of Using a Deployment Partner

The secret to successful leadership is the ability to build or find the right teams to implement corporate visions. The right team to enable a successful product deployment might not even be found within the organization itself. Sometimes the best solution is to partner with an outside vendor, which can provide teams with the right mix of technological know-how and project management skills for success.

In a Harvard Business Review article, “How to Make Agile Work for the C-Suite,” Eric Garton and Andy Noble emphasize the power of small teams, operating outside the normal organizational structure, can give businesses an innovative boost:

Create small, talent-rich teams working outside the hierarchy to address your most important priorities. These teams are given permission to use Agile methods and processes and to work outside of the often energy-draining and slower-moving traditional processes and decision hierarchies. Many leading companies such as Airbnb, Spotify, Google, Amazon and Microsoft have adopted Agile as a way of managing innovation and product development. Self-managed teams with limited hierarchy and bureaucracy are explicit features of such organizational models.
